Cult «Handy» made of ocean bound plastic

back

A limited edition was launched for the first time under the Migros cult brand "Handy" at the beginning of May. The bottle is made of ocean-bound plastic and is ocean blue in color to match the theme.

At the beginning of May, packaging made of ocean-bound plastic entered Migros for the first time. This refers to recycled plastic that is collected in coastal areas so that it does not end up in the oceans. The limited edition of the cult Handy brand is presented in ocean blue color and matching fresh scent. For this project, the Mibelle Group partnered with the Swiss company Tide Ocean SA (#tide), which specializes in upcycling ocean-bound plastic, and with the company Biplast AG.

10 million tons of plastic end up in our oceans every year

This corresponds to more than one truck load per minute. About 80% of these are originally from coastal areas. Fishermen and local communities collect all types of plastics in Thai and Indonesian coastal areas: PET, PP, HDPE and LDPE. The collected plastic is sorted, cleaned and processed into high-quality plastic granulate. The #tide ocean material® generated from this is used to manufacture new products, thus closing the loop.

Sustainable concept with social commitment

The ecological footprint of the #tide ocean material® was calculated using an LCA (Life Cycle Analysis) report. This resulted in up to 80% fewer CO2 emissions compared to virgin plastic. Along the entire value chain, #tide advocates for fair and safe working conditions for fishermen and collection center workers. To strengthen environmental awareness, regular workshops are held on the subject of plastic recycling and work is carried out with the local population on setting up a local waste management system.
