30 years of Mibelle Biochemistry


It all started back in 1991, when Mibelle Biochemistry was founded as a business unit of the Mibelle Group and gained a foothold in the international cosmetics market with a new molecule.

The “sodium carboxymethyl beta-glucan” molecule marked the start of a fascinating success story in 1994. A small team working with Dr. Fred Zülli, Mibelle Biochemistry’s founder and Managing Director, developed the novel active ingredient CM-glucan which, due to its immune-boosting properties, is once again attracting great interest during the pandemic. Mibelle Biochemistry obtained a foothold in the international cosmetics market with CM-glucan and built up a distribution network in more than 50 countries.

International breakthrough with PhytoCellTec™ active ingredient

Mibelle Biochemistry has relied on innovation from the outset. However, it achieved a global breakthrough in 2008 with introduction of the PhytoCellTec™ Malus domestica active ingredient. Mibelle Biochemistry became the first company to offer an active ingredient based on plant stems cells to the cosmetics market. This technology achieved large-scale cultivation of callus cells from rare or protected plants, such as the “Uttwiler Spätlauber” apple variety. Launch of the apple stem cell product gained Mibelle Biochemistry a massive market presence and the PhytoCellTec ™ technology was even recognised at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio +20) as an eco breakthrough.

New string to Mibelle Biochemistry’s bow in the rapidly growing Food & Health market

Four years ago, in addition to the global cosmetics industry, Mibelle Biochemistry developed a second product portfolio, called Food & Health, with active ingredients for food supplements. “In the next few years we anticipate great growth potential in this market”, said Dr. Fred Zülli.
